This week, Mousetalgia welcomes author/historian J B Kaufman from the Hyperion Historical Alliance back to the show to discuss his first book for the organization, "The Making of Walt Disney's Fun and Fancy Free." In this first publication from the group's academic monograph series, Kaufman explores little known facts and shares never before seen images from the making of "Fun and Fancy Free," one of Walt Disney's most-loved package films from the 40s. Then, Kristen reports on a live event hosted by Micechat called "The 55ers: The Pioneers Who Founded Disneyland." This event, hosted by David Koenig, who also authored a book on the subject, introduced insiders who were with Disneyland during its opening days, including Mouseketeer Bobby Burgess and Disney Legend Bob Gurr. In the past two weeks, the Disney fan community was rocked with the news of the passing of two legendary names in the history of the Walt Disney Company. On February 9, Ron Miller - the son in law of Walt Disney and CEO/President of the company for many years - passed away at the age of 85. Miller helped bridge the gap between Walt Disney's personal enterprise and the international entertainment corporation that the Disney company would become, and was president of the Walt Disney Family Foundation, which is responsible for the Walt Disney Family Museum. Then, on February 15, Dave Smith passed away at the age of 78. Smith was responsible for developing the Walt Disney Archives for the Walt Disney Company, which he started in 1970, and was regarded as the highest authority on the history of everything related to Disney. In today's episode, Team Mousetalgia share stories of our personal interactions with both of these men, who were so important to making the Walt Disney Company what it is today.

Mousetalgia talks dining at Disneyland Paris! Kristen travels to the Disneyland Paris resort again, and talks about annual pass discounts for lodging (and why concierge level lodging is mandatory - hint: it's the food), and the food and dining experiences, including: tips on making reservations, reviews of the Agrobah Cafe, Café de Cascadeurs, the Inventions character breakfast buffet, and the "Petit Jean" experience by chef Jean Imbert, a 12 dish meal at the Disneyland Hotel which was inspired by iconic fairytales. Imbert, a Top Chef winner in France, created this eco-friendly menu, which included five wine pairings and one champagne pairing. Kristen reviews the entire Petite Jean experience, including 12 courses over the space of 4-5 hours, including organic leeks (with scissors) inspired by Tangled, lobster ravioli inspired by the Little Mermaid's Chef Louis; Mrs. Pott's beef broth, Lady and the Tramp spaghetti and of course, Remy's Ratatouille, with sweet courses too - including Pooh's honey, Cinderella's pumpkin, Snow White's poisoned apple, Sleeping Beauty's (lopsided) cake and Jack Sparrow's rum. Hired in 1954 and employed at the park for 33 years, Frank, a WW II Marine veteran, was hired to care for and train horses and mules for Walt's still-in-development Disneyland park. Frank drove a covered wagon for Disneyland's opening day parade behind Fess Parker, and worked at the Disneyland Pony Farm caring for the 200+ horses, mules and other animals. Next, Michael Vargo, VP of D23 and the Disney Archives, joins us to talk about the 2018 Gold Membership Gift, which celebrates 90 years of Mickey Mouse. We'll discuss some of the surprises included in the box, and how the D23 team went through 90 years of history to choose their 23 favorite samples of memorabilia from the extensive career of Mickey Mouse.
