Disney Legend Jim Henson founded a "Creature Shop" in 1979 to create mechanical creatures and whimsical beasts for various productions. That shop, now led by Henson's son Brian, is the basis for a new reality competition on SyFy. Team Mousetalgia welcomes Joseph Freed, Executive Producer and co-creator of the new SyFy series Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge, to this week's episode to share behind the scenes stories and secrets from this exciting new show in which amateur contestants vie for a dream job working for Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Robert J. Sherman talks about his father, Robert B. Sherman of the Sherman Brothers, on this week's episode of Mousetalgia. In honor of "Moose," the recently published autobiography by Robert B. Sherman, his son Robbie (who edited the book) talks to Mousetalgia this week about his father and his writings over a lifetime that came together to create his compelling, literary autobiography. Robbie talks about "A Spoonful of Sherman," a cabaret show celebrating the Sherman family music, and discusses how his father went about creating some of his most memorable music, including songs from "The Jungle Book" and the original anthem for humankind, "It's a Small World." Robbie also shares his views on Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks," as "Moose" was used as an important research tool for the development of the film; and he also discusses Meryl Streep's recent claim that Walt Disney was anti-Semetic. Disney Legend Dave Smith, Disney Archivist Emeritus, joins Mousetalgia this week to tell the true story of Walt Disney's pursuit of P. L. Travers to bring her book Mary Poppins to the screen. In anticipation of the upcoming feature film Saving Mr. Banks, we look into the history of the making of the iconic film and discover the true-life challenges the studio encountered as the film began production. We also talk to a Mousetalgia listener about his own experience dealing personally with P. L. Travers in an attempt to bring Mary Poppins to the stage, and Kristen reports from a preview screening of Saving Mr. Banks. "The Optimist" takes center stage in this third episode in Mousetalgia's coverage of the D23 Expo. As part of the promotional machine behind Brad Bird's upcoming film "Tomorrowland," "The Optimist," an alternate reality game, has captured the imaginations of many forward-looking futurists. Participating in the finale of its initial phase at the D23 Expo, Jeff and Kristen report on meeting many of the characters inhabiting this alternate reality as they solve puzzles and chase clues, working together with like-minded souls in their pursuit of a proposed fictional utopian society with which WED was intricately involved. Disney also unveiled its "Tomorrowland" pavilion at D23, burying fans in piles of clues and historical documents, all of which add pieces to the "Tomorrowland" puzzle. We also take a look back at WED's real history during the '64-'65 World's Fair, and try to find some context for Walt Disney's intriguing concept of a glittering "City of Tomorrow." Disney Legend Marc Davis in his own words: This week, on the centennial of his birth, the Mousetalgia team presents a special salute to Marc Davis, one of Walt Disney's "Nine Old Men" and one of the most influential Imagineers to ever work for WED Enterprises. First, we present an exclusive oral history of Marc's background and history with the Disney Studios by Marc himself, taken from a never-before aired interview. Tina describes the various offerings, sets, and experiences associated with collecting Vinylmation figures, Disney's latest collectible craze.
