Merry Christmas! This week on Mousetalgia, we talk Candlelight with Disney historian Joseph Titizian. Joseph talks us through the history of the Candlelight Processional, and then takes us behind the scenes of this year's 60th anniversary of the ceremony, including some samples from this year's performances. Then, Kristen and Jeff discuss Mary Poppins Returns with a spoiler-free review, a discussion about the score and songs, and our tuppence regarding the differences and similarities between the new film and the 1964 classic. Lindsey discusses the exciting panels, the intriguing exhibits, the exclusive merchandise, and the exciting opportunities she had to interview some of the special guests at the event, including Bret Iwan and Bill Farmer, the official voices of Mickey Mouse and Goofy, and Becky Cline, the director of the Walt Disney Archives. Then, Kristen and Jeff wreck the podcast and discuss Disney's latest animated film "Wreck it Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet." First, we speak with Imagineering Executive Producer Jeffrey Shaver-Moskowitz, who led a team of Imagineers in creating Pixar Pier in Disney California Adventure. Jeffrey tells us all about the process, challenges, and decisions that led to the recent unveiling of the new land celebrating all things Pixar. Then, we speak with Disney artist Kevin Kidney, who tells us the story of the creation of Disneyland's nighttime spectacular Fantasmic, a show that he helped develop. Dave and Becky traveled to Emeryville to see a Super VIP screening of "The Incredibles 2" at the Pixar Animation Studio and Mousetalgia reports from the event. Women in Animation (WIA) hosted an exclusive screening of the new film at Pixar, and Dave and Becky were able to attend. During the event, attendees were able to meet and speak with female animators, artists and filmmakers involved with the production. Mousetalgia talks dining at Disneyland Paris! Kristen travels to the Disneyland Paris resort again, and talks about annual pass discounts for lodging (and why concierge level lodging is mandatory - hint: it's the food), and the food and dining experiences, including: tips on making reservations, reviews of the Agrobah Cafe, Café de Cascadeurs, the Inventions character breakfast buffet, and the "Petit Jean" experience by chef Jean Imbert, a 12 dish meal at the Disneyland Hotel which was inspired by iconic fairytales. Imbert, a Top Chef winner in France, created this eco-friendly menu, which included five wine pairings and one champagne pairing. Kristen reviews the entire Petite Jean experience, including 12 courses over the space of 4-5 hours, including organic leeks (with scissors) inspired by Tangled, lobster ravioli inspired by the Little Mermaid's Chef Louis; Mrs. Pott's beef broth, Lady and the Tramp spaghetti and of course, Remy's Ratatouille, with sweet courses too - including Pooh's honey, Cinderella's pumpkin, Snow White's poisoned apple, Sleeping Beauty's (lopsided) cake and Jack Sparrow's rum. Jim shares fascinating bits of history, including the Haunted Mansion's grand opening at Club 33, bringing the Churro to Disneyland, meeting the love of his life at the Tahitian Terrace, and seeing Walt Disney himself in Disneyland. Mousetalgia heads east once again, and Dave and Becky report from their kid-free trip to the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. First, they spend some time at the Universal Orlando Resort, and talk about staying on Universal property, the front of line pass, Harry Potter's dominance, and all those screens - plus, the best meal of their whole vacation. Then, it's on to Walt Disney World, and a stay at Coronado Springs - Becky's new favorite moderate resort - and Epcot for "Flower & Garden" and the food booths: carne guisada, pork tacos, and frushi. California Grill provides the worst meal of the trip - hear the details - and Sci-Fi Dine-In offers a surprising meal. This week, Team Mousetalgia reports on a recent talk at the Walt Disney Family Museum by author Marcy Carriker Smothers on her new book "Eat Like Walt," an emphatically researched book about Walt Disney and food, and how he and his company viewed the dining experience at his studio, his theme park, and in his personal life. Smothers talks about the variety of food at Disneyland park over its history, and tells stories about dumpster-diving and sleuthing to re-create secret recipes from the past. Then, Mousetalgia welcomes Walt Disney Imagineer Chris Merritt back to the show to discuss Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. To celebrate last week's 59th anniversary of Sleeping Beauty, Mousetalgia concludes its recent focus on Eyvind Earle and the classic film by talking about Merritt's work in bringing Sleeping Beauty Castle out of hibernation at Disneyland in 2008 and renewing the visual effects tech while staying close to Earle's original vision for the castle walk-through attraction. Merritt also talks about his relationship with mentor Marc Davis, the famed animator responsible for Sleeping Beauty's Princess Aurora and the evil Maleficent.

This week we present an Emporium of topics. First, Disney historian David Koenig joins us to talk about the late Frank Pfannenstiel, who was the last Disneyland cowboy. Hired in 1954 and employed at the park for 33 years, Frank, a WW II Marine veteran, was hired to care for and train horses and mules for Walt's still-in-development Disneyland park. Frank drove a covered wagon for Disneyland's opening day parade behind Fess Parker, and worked at the Disneyland Pony Farm caring for the 200+ horses, mules and other animals. Next, Michael Vargo, VP of D23 and the Disney Archives, joins us to talk about the 2018 Gold Membership Gift, which celebrates 90 years of Mickey Mouse. We'll discuss some of the surprises included in the box, and how the D23 team went through 90 years of history to choose their 23 favorite samples of memorabilia from the extensive career of Mickey Mouse. Finally, New York Times bestselling author Matthew Reinhart joins us to talk about creating pop up books, and we talk about the art of combining story and dimensional art for both his new book "Pixar: A Pop-Up Celebration." We also take a quick look back at Eyvind Earle's famous bicycle trip across the country, which helped to launch his career as a fine artist. Next, Kristen discusses the "Cinderella Festival" which was held at Disneyland in March 1971.
