This week, Team Mousetalgia reports on a recent talk at the Walt Disney Family Museum by author Marcy Carriker Smothers on her new book "Eat Like Walt," an emphatically researched book about Walt Disney and food, and how he and his company viewed the dining experience at his studio, his theme park, and in his personal life. Smothers talks about the variety of food at Disneyland park over its history, and tells stories about dumpster-diving and sleuthing to re-create secret recipes from the past. Then, Mousetalgia welcomes Walt Disney Imagineer Chris Merritt back to the show to discuss Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. To celebrate last week's 59th anniversary of Sleeping Beauty, Mousetalgia concludes its recent focus on Eyvind Earle and the classic film by talking about Merritt's work in bringing Sleeping Beauty Castle out of hibernation at Disneyland in 2008 and renewing the visual effects tech while staying close to Earle's original vision for the castle walk-through attraction. Merritt also talks about his relationship with mentor Marc Davis, the famed animator responsible for Sleeping Beauty's Princess Aurora and the evil Maleficent.

This week we present an Emporium of topics. First, Disney historian David Koenig joins us to talk about the late Frank Pfannenstiel, who was the last Disneyland cowboy. Hired in 1954 and employed at the park for 33 years, Frank, a WW II Marine veteran, was hired to care for and train horses and mules for Walt's still-in-development Disneyland park. Frank drove a covered wagon for Disneyland's opening day parade behind Fess Parker, and worked at the Disneyland Pony Farm caring for the 200+ horses, mules and other animals. Next, Michael Vargo, VP of D23 and the Disney Archives, joins us to talk about the 2018 Gold Membership Gift, which celebrates 90 years of Mickey Mouse. We'll discuss some of the surprises included in the box, and how the D23 team went through 90 years of history to choose their 23 favorite samples of memorabilia from the extensive career of Mickey Mouse. Finally, New York Times bestselling author Matthew Reinhart joins us to talk about creating pop up books, and we talk about the art of combining story and dimensional art for both his new book "Pixar: A Pop-Up Celebration." Patty Peraza was an effects animator at Disney, also starting with Fox and the Hound, who was sponsored through her art education at Cal Arts by Lilian Disney herself. Bill Rogers and Camille Dixon use their voices famously at the parks of Disneyland Resort as announcers, Bill at Disneyland and Camille at Disney California Adventure. All four guests share special recollections from their long careers with Disney, touching on memorable moments and special people that helped them along the way.

While the item made national news with misleading headlines, Mike tells the story in his own words of how he came to discover this incredible piece of Disneyana. Next, we welcome author James Bohn to the show to talk about his new book, "Music in Disney's Animated Features: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to The Jungle Book." Welcome to Mousetalgia's super-sized Cast Member Corner! This week, we celebrate 30 years of the Disney Store by taking a look at the past three decades of various formats for the retail destination, and we talk to two veteran Disney Store Cast Members about their time working for Disney - the training, the merchandise, and the people and guests that have made the Disney Store a shopping experience unlike any other. Then, we continue our special edition of Mousetalgia with a conversation with previous Disneyland Cast Member Deborah Breedlove, who spent many years as a lead in West Side Attractions, encompassing New Orleans Square, Bear Country, and parts of Frontierland and Adventureland. Deborah also worked at Disney University, sunk one of Tom Sawyer's Rafts loaded with guests, swam with Michael Jackson and swapped war stories (Star Wars, that is) with George Lucas. Deborah is also responsible for creating the award that is known today as the "blue badge" Disney Legacy Award at the parks.

Lifting Michael Jackson: This week, Mousetalgia welcomes special guest Eddy Collins, who has spent decades with the Disney Company. Collins started doing custodial work at Disneyland and eventually became Global Sales Manager and a spokesperson for the resort. Eddy talks about his first job at the park as a sweeper, and how he quickly became a prestigious VIP tour guide, then moved to guest communications and management, and on to special events for the opening of Disney's California Adventure (after a run-in with the Disneyland Ambassador program and roles in TV/radio broadcasting). Eddy talks about managing Disneyland's international publicity, becoming the resort's Global Sales Manager, and the importance of a little pixie dust. This week, the Team Mousetalgia doctor is in to dispense a little therapy related to Disney's latest crop of live action films. For various reasons, we haven't been hitting every film on opening weekend lately and we ask why. Kristen skipped Jungle Book, Jeff skipped Alice (along with most everyone else), and Becky skipped Zootopia, so we check in with each other to find out what we look for in Disney releases to give us the incentive to get to the theater. Then, Jeff reviews the forthcoming book "Disney Parks Presents The Haunted Mansion," a gorgeous art book masquerading as a children's read-along. A team of Imagineers recently spoke about the ins and outs of starting a career as an Imagineer, and Jeff reports on the panel discussion. Hosted at the Walt Disney Family Museum, Imagineers Marty Sklar, Tony Baxter, Frank Stanek and Tom Morris spoke candidly about how to enter the field of theme park attraction design, including topics such as the right attitude and training, your portfolio, the best entry jobs to launch a career in Imagineering, and more. As a bonus, Sklar and Baxter offered surprising personal opinions about hot topics including Star Wars Land and Magic Bands. Next - Slingbacks, strollers and snacks, oh my: we talk toddlers at the park as Kristen reports on her first time at Disneyland with her 16 month old daughter and offers tips and tricks for a successful trip. First, we present the advantages as well as the disadvantages of each of the Disneyland resort hotels (Paradise Pier, The Disneyland Hotel, and the Grand Californian) and discuss amenities, food, family activities, convenience, and more.
